Week One Update

Week One Update

Today I celebrate and embrace the loss of 8 pounds.

On my frame, with the amount of weight I have to lose (over 150 pounds), 8 pounds doesn’t seem like a lot and you can’t see it when you look at me. But that’s ok, because this weight loss journey is about me and my body. Do you know what kind of impact just 8 pounds can have? For every pound over weight we are, that’s 4 pounds of pressure on our joints. I just eliminated 32 added pounds of pressure on my joints! That’s fabulous!

I also made progress on my goals. Progress is part of what fuels our passion to keep going. When I can look back and see how far I’ve gone, that’s what’s going to help me get through those tough times when I feel like nothing is happening and I’ll NEVER meet my goal weight.

So how did I kick those pounds to the curb? I joined a challenge group hosted by my awesome BeachBody coach. It started last Monday and every day I earn points by being accountable and supporting the other people in the group. The group doesn’t teach extreme weight loss or how to starve myself to get fast results that will come back later (and bring friends). No the group teaches me small healthy daily habits to work on and supports me through the fitness program that meets me at my level and provides a little challenge.

What are those small changes? Things like drinking my water each day. Checking in for my daily work out, even on rest days (and actually taking my rest days). They help me in making healthier food choices and getting in my recommended amount of protein and vegetables. When I have a rough day, that group has my back. They’re the ones reminding me that I can do this and that it takes one small step at a time. They lift and encourage me and when I need to, they give me that quick kick in the rear to get moving.

Challenge groups have done wonders for my personal life as well. I started posting ‘sweaty mug photos’ that’s the selfie you take after you’ve worked out when your hair is a mess and there’s sweat dripping down your face, you’re breathing hard and your face is red. Who celebrates photos like that?!? My awesome group of fellow challengers do! We all take those photos. There’s no priming or adding make up or trying to look “sexy”. This is the real thing. I swear it’s almost more of a “who can look worse after working out” competition and its awesome! No one judges me for how I look. They congratulate me for looking happy or exhausted or like a royal mess. They congratulate me for taking another step along my journey to a healthier, happier me. How amazing is that!?! Talk about a confidence booster. I even find myself feeling more confident about taking and posting photos of myself. Something I’ve never been able to do. I look in the mirror now and find good things to say instead of degrading self-talk.

I still have a long way to go. With my weight loss and my health. I struggle with getting the right portion sizes and eating enough of the right things. I struggle with emotional eating and binge eating. I struggle with getting that daily exercise in and feeling like I matter. But every day I get one step closer to being able to do the things I dream of. And this January Challenge group is really helping me take the steps I need.

Childhood Dreams Defined My Future

When we’re young we have big dreams. We have plans and goals and sometimes we make decisions that affect our lives years later based on those dreams of youth. At one point I wanted to be like Janet Jackson.

She was the only strong, beautiful, and talented African American woman I really looked up to (let’s face it Whoopi Goldberg was awesome but she wasn’t a role model for girls in middle school). I stayed up late one night, way past the time my mother had told me to go to bed, so that I could watch Janet Jackson on tour. It was glorious. I found her captivating. She was beautiful, she could dance, and she could sing, all things I dreamed of being able to do. During one of the interviews they asked her about how she stayed so fit and she talked about how she did 75 sit-ups every single day. Every day! No matter what happened, or where she was, she carved out time in her super busy schedule to do 75 sit-ups. So, in true pre-teen mental fashion, I decided I wanted to be awesome like her and the way to get there was through sit-ups. I knew I had a ways to go when it came to fitness, so instead of 75 sit-ups a day, I would do 100. For years I kept up that habit. I wasn’t always consistent with a daily practice but I was pretty consistent in doing 100 sit-ups multiple times per week. I even developed some abs. I didn’t have Janet’s rocking ab definition but I did have 2 ab muscles that were clearly defined, nestled right under my breasts. Years later, when I lost the habit and started gaining weight, I still had definition of those two muscles. I don’t have them anymore. I lost sight of my goals for a while and gained a bunch of weight, seriously, it took tons of weight gain before those muscles disappeared. But something I find even more interesting is how that one choice has affected so much of my life. I’m 32 and even now when I’m needing to burn some energy or craving a nice work out, my first thoughts are still “Oooooo sit-ups! Must do sit-ups…”
Which has all lead me to my current passion for health, nutrition, and fitness. However, that's a topic for another day. I think I'll go do some sit-ups now...

Lessons from Freya

The first time I saw her she was walking away from me. Head hung low to the ground while she emitted a low keening sound that occasionally crescendoed into an outright high pitched howl before dropping back down. She had tiny feet at the end of her abnormally long black legs. Her long lean body was marred by the slightly protruding belly that made her look pregnant. Her blocky head appeared too big for her body and her floppy ears hung listlessly along the sides of her face. She was so ugly she was adorable and her history and refusal to desire anything from humankind made her an instant sell to me. I had to have this awkward man hating puppy.
At 3 months old she had already acquired a lifetime of experiences. Having been abandoned in the woods near Hoonah Alaska at only 6 weeks old, she had had to fight for her continued existence while watching the eventual deaths of 4 of her siblings. April in Southeast Alaska isn’t always kind in its weather. While we get the typical April showers, we’ve also been known to frequently get snow and ice as winter tries to hold onto it grip upon the land. With temperatures ranging from 26 degrees Fahrenheit to 36 degrees, it continues to amaze me that any of these defenseless puppies managed to survive, let alone two of them.
Black Labrador Retrievers are known for their high spirits, athletic ability, fierce loyalty, and high intelligence. All traits that were needed when they were originally breed to be companionable duck hunting dogs. I learned quickly that, despite the boasting from the owner of her mother, my dog was NOT a Black Lab. My first indication of this was the small white patches on the backs of two of her feet and hidden on the center of her chest. According to the American Kennel Club, Labrador Retrievers come in three solid colors with no markings. This, and her strong independent streak, confirmed the rumor that her father had been a husky.
I gave her the name Freya. Freya is the name of a Norse Goddess, patron Goddess of women. She is known for her beauty, her outgoing friendly nature, and in some legends her fierce support of fighting women. It seemed rather appropriate that my Freya was none of those things but chose to respond to this one, of the thousands, of names I tried out on her. My Freya was awkward, strongly independent, and wanted nothing to do with human companionship.
Despite Freya’s determination to be self-reliant, she immediately glommed onto my 9 year old husky Dytie. Much to Dytie’s despair, she could not shake the small furry beast that would follow her and lick her relentlessly. Dogs are curious creatures. I’ve always heard that one of the great things about them is their almost endless capacity for forgiveness and love. It was only with her reaction to Dytie, and my mom’s 8 year old 130 pound Black Lab Malamute mix Monty, that I began to see that Freya’s tough exterior was masking a quiet inner strength and secret desire to be loved.
Frequent trips to the trails of Juneau revealed another side of Freya. The second she would see the towering Evergreen trees her head would droop and her tail would be tucked so far under her legs as to give the first impression that she was actually a ‘he’. Then she would start to shake, and if she wasn’t in the close companionship for Dytie or Monty, the low keening sound would begin again as she started to panic from the memories of those three horrible weeks of her puppyhood. I never knew dogs could experience something as complex as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But she managed to exhibit clear signs of it. These signs were also present at home.
A common way to house train a puppy is through the use of a kennel. A kennel is a plastic crate with air holes and a metal grate that latches. The perfect sized kennel is one in which the dog has plenty of room move around comfortably, has space between where they lay in it and their food and water dishes, and when they sit in it their heads down touch the top. To train them you start by taking them out and having some kind of verbal command such as “do your business” or “go potty” as you walk them in a designated bathroom area. If they do their thing, then they get some free time before they’re returned to their kennel. This turns the kennel into a safe place they can always go and helps establish that the kennel is like the rest of the house and messes should not be made in them. Over time their free time outside of the kennel and the designated bathroom area gets extended until they’re consistently making messes outside and the kennel becomes just an extra hidey hole for them. The use of a kennel also gives us humans an added bonus of a safe place for the dog to go when we have to leave the house so they can’t destroy things. This concept did not work well for Freya. From her first moments in the kennel she discovered that she was alone in a potentially dark place. This brought on more screaming and I do mean screaming. She managed to emit a high pitched kind of yell that sounded like someone was torturing a baby. The sound was such that you could hear it outside and 3 houses away and would go on for hours or as long as you left her in the kennel. However, if you left her outside of her kennel she would quickly discover something the needed to be eaten.
Freya’s idea of food included things like rocks, towels, socks, shoes, chairs, and her dog bowl. Yes, the bowl itself was a representation of food and therefore needed to be eaten. I believe this view of food steamed from that same traumatic puppyhood experience. As a 6 week old puppy she would have just started eating puppy food and being weaned off her mother’s milk. Ideally a puppy should be weaned at 8 weeks old or older. Historically speaking, this is when they have developed puppy teeth that are tough enough to make an impact on the skin, meat, and bones of the wild animals they would have been being taught how to eat by their pack. Having had no such training from her wild brethren, Freya and her litter would have had to try and figure out what food is for themselves. As anyone who has been around young animals or young children know, what constitutes as food is a supremely broad term to them. Anything that can be put in their mouths for possible consumption, will be.
Training was another painfully sad experience in the first year and a half of Freya’s life. Normally having an older dog around helps immensely in the training procedures. The younger dog will watch the older dog go through commands and get treats and pick up on what they need to do to get treats as well. Once again Freya exhibited her complete desire to go against the norms of doggy society by not learning from her elders. She would watch as commands were given to other dogs and they were treated but when it was her turn she would stare blankly and do nothing. My thought was that you could clearly see that the hamster in her head was not running on his wheel like he should have been. I once told a dog trainer and behaviorist about this and was told how wrong I was. That all dogs, especialy Black Labs, had an inherent intelligence and I just didn’t know how to train dogs despite the classes and training I had done and the years of working with different dogs. Once she met Freya and spent a very frustrated hour trying to teach her, she dubbed Freya the ‘simple dog’ and never spoke of it again. I now know that the behaviorist was correct in that we just hadn’t found a way to communicate with Freya yet. This lack of learning was, once again, one of Freya’s external ways of dealing with a deep rooted fear of dealing with humans and the betrayal that could stem from such interactions.
My first indication that Freya was starting to warm up to me was demonstrated in her new found love for eating my clothing. Only my clothing and she was very specific on which parts of clothing were eatable to her. The crotch of pants and undies, the cups of bras, the back of the knees of pants and the elbows of my shirts, jackets, and sweatshirts. Also the left shoe, only the left shoe, not the right one, and preferably the ankle of the left shoe. The left ankle is where I’ve had extensive surgery due to my own reckless youth and my need to refuse to conform to the norms of society that lead me to constantly injure myself from doing things such as jumping off the roof of second story buildings and down stairway shafts.
Over the last few years Freya has slowly learned to love and find excitement in the natural world around her. It started with something simple. Freya watched as the pounding rain that poured off the corner of our roof would strike the ground and bounce back up. I watched as she decided the flying droplets were attacking her and so tried to bite them before they could bite her. This was her first decision to explore the natural world around her that I observed. It didn’t take long before she was running through the rain and trying to catch the water drops on her long drooping tongue. Her feet splashing through the puddles and turning the grassy yard into muddy dibbits. Not long after that short terrifying walks through parks turned into long hikes through the temperate rainforest surrounding Juneau as she learned that she could crunch through fallen leaves, chase after the chittering squirrels, and still have a safe place to come home to in the end.
Her vomit inducing fear of car rides become exciting outings in which her head could hang out of the car window and her nose could quiver as she took in the intoxicating smells of damp dirt, sweet leaked coolant, and the icy wind that blew off the Mendenhall Glacier that would freeze the nose hairs, if she had had any.
Freya grew into a beautiful dog. Her tiny feet grew out, her distended belly shrank as the parasites that infested it were destroyed. Her body caught up with her long legs and turned her into a sleek lanky dog with the softest fur the color of midnight. So dark she disappears when the lights are turned off and is known to frequently scare the daylights out of people by popping up in random places, unheard and unseen until the last moment. Freya discovered the joy of having a soft place to land and a nice dark kennel to hide in when she needed to feel safe.

I’ve learned a lot from Freya. Though the world can be a scary place, we should take the time to find things of beauty and inspiration in them. Like the smell of  wood fire on the breeze and the sound of fall leaves crackling under out feet. We need to find joy in the small things that help us move forward from fear and into forgiveness. Freya has shown that through love we can overcome the memories that haunt us. Freya has now become my Fearless Freya as she boldly encounters new experiences with confidence and curiosity and takes delight in the knowledge that she will always have a safe place to come home to and a family that loves her.  Freya has also taught me something profoundly impactful upon my own life: I am Freya.

The Shakeology Difference

I have always struggled with energy issues. And as some of you know a year and some months ago I started on a Thyroid support pill that has greatly increased my energy levels and focus. But despite that change there are still days when its a huge struggle to get through the day and get anything done. I frequently have days were all I want to do is sleep or I don't feel like I have the energy to do anything. I live off of XS Energy Drinks, Vitamins, and Supplements. When I get excited about something and show energy and compassion, I spend 2-3 days recovering from an hour or two of showing the person I really am.

For the past week I have't experience this problem, except for yesterday. Yesterday I could barely get through the day. I had cleaning and cooking to do and my mom was coming over for a girl's night. I spent most of the day fighting the impulse to go back to sleep and to cancel on her. She was only here for a couple hours and we kept it really low key. But despite that I crashed the second she left and slept for 12 hours not-so-straight. Not so straight because I have a 14 year old dog who needs to be let out for frequent bathroom breaks and I'm a light sleeper so I wake up at every noise. The wind has been strong and beautiful today so its been knocking over things all over the neighborhood and waking me up constantly, amongst other things.

This morning at the ripe time of 11am I finally dragged myself out of bed and struggled through taking my thyroid pill and letting the dogs out. Then I sat in a fuzzy existence for an hour before I ate. Having no energy to do much I grabbed a scoop of strawberry Shakeology, added a banana, some ice cubes, a couple shakes of cinnamon, and some vanilla almond milk to my little single cup Ninja blender and buzzed up breakfast before hobbling back to a darkened corner of the livingroom to bask in my fuzzy existence.

15 minutes later. Can I shout that to you? Imagine me shouting that to you "15 MINUETS LATER!" I am snapping pictures, working on my goals for the next week. Playing with my dogs, watching TV, posting on Facebook, bouncing off the walls and waiting oh so not patiently for when my stomach calms down so I could do my PiYo workout for the day. I felt awesome, powerful, strong, POSITIVE. Life is amazing, I'm amazing, I love life, I love me, I love my dogs, I love my friends, I love those awesome people who introduced me to Team BeachBody recently... That was and still is my frame of mind. I was dancing around the house to the bellydancing music in my head and sipping on my smoothie. Bah bah bah bum bum bumpy bum dah dah dah is it too early for the neighbors to pull out my drum and shake the world? Ooops I just shook part of my smoothie onto the wall. And with that I had a light bulb moment.

Have you ever had one of those? A light bulb moment. Those times when our subconscious finally gets our conscious minds to hear what its been trying to tell us. A sudden realization that changes your world. For a week now I've been drinking Shakeology daily. Once a day I mix a smoothie with it in it. Usually in the morning. Then I'm busy busy busy all day long. I do one or two workouts, I think of amazing things to do. I sleep well at night and wake up inspired with an idea for another book. I've had so many ideas for different books this week I'm having trouble keeping them straight. I feel happy, positive, ready to take on the world. I feel...I feel like I could be a super hero. That is the power of Shakeology, Thats the difference its made in my life in just one week. Concentrated nutrition that tastes amazingly great. If this is how I feel after just one week, I'm excited to see how I feel at the end of this 30 day challenge I'm doing!

Sleep deprived, No More!

I've had sleeping issues for years. Insomnia, waking up a million times a night. OK, not a million but waking up constantly like every hour or half hour. I had gotten used to it. It was just a normal part of the night not to sleep well, to have night mares. I started thinking a good night's sleep was when I didn't have night mares and I only woke up once every hour. Awesome right? Hah! Some of you can relate. Not getting enough sleep sucks. But when you've been living like that for years, it just becomes a normal part of life. Which is totally lame.

I've tried all sorts of things. Like teas, essential oils, sleep routines, no electronics for an hour before bed, etc. Sometimes I felt down right desperate. Desperate for a decent night's sleep. Especially when its been days of insomnia and when I did sleep it would only be for an hour or two and I would wake up a tons of times during that short period. I talked to my doctar about it and she prescribed me a sleep aide. Luminesta. Have you looked at the possible side effects of that stuff? Holy crap is that scary. But I was desperate, however, I never got to try it. My insurance company, TRICARE, said we needed to try other things first or I would have to pay 100% out of pocket. Yikes! Those pills are freaking expensive. So I said forget it and and suffered on in silence.

Now I've always been a light sleeper. Those of you who have known me before the past 5/6 years are probably thinking. So you're waking up because of noises outside or inside or from the people in one of the adjourning apartments or or or. Yes, since I lost Zeus and some other stuff in my life went to hell. I have been even more of a light sleeper, waking up at every little noise since I don't completely feel safe. But that is a different kind of reason to wake up and my constantly waking up all night long wasn't just because of "things that go bump in the night" and my trust issues.

This was life and it wasn't getting better. I missed the nights of wonderful dreams of fighting bad guys and saving the world. Where when I woke up in the morning I would have to fight to get up, not because I didn't want to face the day but because I wanted to finish the story in my dream. I had places to be and people to save and, heck, when I'm awake my totally awesome super powers no longer exist.

And then, something changed...Two months ago I was scanning through the numerous daily facebook messages for my graduating class at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and I stumbled across a post. One of my classmates had a client who had been struggling with sleep. After talking to the client about all sorts of things relating to sleep he/she found out that the client uses her cell phone for an alarm clock. He/she explained the client about the signals that our cell phones are constantly giving off and how it can affect us. He/She explained all sorts of stuff about why and how but I was no longer paying attention (bad me) I got stuck on the cell phones for an alarm clock thing. Then there was the client testimonial. The client had decided to give it a go. Putting the cell phone on airplane mode at night so she could still use it for an alarm clock. At night, she and her husband would either move anything with a wifi signal out of the bedroom or they would put it on airplane mode for the night. Voila! At the two week check in with my classmate, she told him/her (I don't remember which) about how she and her husband had been sleeping soundly every night and no longer had sleep issues.

Well, what the heck! It was worth a try right? So that night I told my husband about it and explained that I wanted to give it a try. We both use our cell phones for alarm clocks. So before bed we set our alarms and put our phones on airplane mode. OH MY GOD!!! I had the best sleep of my life. The best sleep I've had in years! YEARS!!! It's been two months. I've slept through every night, only waking up occasionally to investigate weird noises (or when Dytie was having stomach issues and was throwing up throughout the night). I've had one night of insomnia ONE! I used Lavender Essential oil on my feet and spent a few minutes meditating and then was able to go to sleep. I've had a couple nights of issues waking up constantly. Both times we figured out that my husband had forgotten to put his phone on airplane mode. I started thinking about things and reading back through my journal and dream journals and was able to pinpoint when my sleep went to hell.  That's right, you guessed it. Everything goes back to when we started sleeping with our cell phones next to the bed at night. It was before we ditched the alarm clock. Hmm...

So you might think this sounds a little hokey. But if you've been having sleep issues I say why not give it a try. I don't have all the facts but you can look up all the reasons why having your cell phone next to the bed at night is bad. You can spend lots of time researching it yourself. Or you could give it a try and see what happens. If you don't want to put your cell phone on airplane mode, or you need to have it on at night for some reason. Move it out of the room. Get an alarm clock. Put your cell phone in the living room (or some other room then the bedroom) and just turn up the volume so you can hear if it goes off at night. There are a million reasons why having a good nights sleep is so important. Heck, there are probably billions of reasons. Your health, your sleep, your life is totally worth giving it a try.

It's May!

It's May. As in the fifth month of the year. Oh my God where did the time go? As with the beginning of each month, I sat down to put together my goals for the month. But this time I started getting depressed. It's the 5th month of the year and I haven't accomplished what I wanted to by now. I started looking at all my monthly and weekly and quarterly goals. Yes, I like lists, and goals and I love the sense of accomplishment from achieving those goals. Of working each day towards a better tomorrow and an awesome future. But as I sat there and saw all the lack of check marks next to my many goals, I started to bum hard. But then, something hit me. Yeah, so I haven't checked off many goals this year, but why not look at all the positive things I have done so far this year. If you look at my yearly goal list, there are some things already checked off. But I've done more then just those things.

As I teach my clients, so I started to do. I started looking at all the positive things I have been doing. All the good. And I started to feel better. So what if I haven't accomplished the big things. I have gotten closer to all of them. I have made a bunch of positive changes one step at a time. Changes I haven't been thinking about because they've become habits. Like eating healthy breakfasts. 5 out of 7 days a week I manage to eat a healthy breakfast. This is a HUGE accomplishment for me. Since in the past I couldn't even say 5 days out of the month I ate any breakfast, let alone a healthy one. But this isn't something I think of much now. It's just something I do. I wake up, take the totally awesome thyroid pill, put together my breakfast smoothie to blend and drink in a few hours and move on with my day. And I change things about my smoothie depending on how I'm feeling that day. Or I even change what I eat. I no longer eat instant oatmeal as the only breakfast I remember to eat later. Why? Because I actually paid attention to my body and realized that every time I eat that stuff it totally drains me. Slows me down, gives me brain fog, takes away all my energy and ability to focus on ANYTHING. I'm more aware of what I eat and when I eat it. I'm making much better choices with my food. I eat better things and I eat in better portion sizes. Eating better makes me feel better. And my life is ruled by feelings. So eating better = feel better = better day = better life.

But the good choices are going beyond just food. I'm spending more time outdoors. Even when the weather isn't awesome (which it totally has been lately) I notice the desire to walk my dogs and spend the evening outside, so I do it.  I'm happier, healthier and I've found the inner peace that I've been searching for. I'm not saying the peace is always there or that its always easy to find, cause there are times when I'm taking deep breaths and counting. Telling myself not to strangle someone who is being astronomically stupid.

I've reached out of my comfort zone and embraced some of the things I used to do years ago. Things I stopped doing as my self confidence dropped. Like talking to people in the grocery line and well, anywhere I happen to be at. I'm not an extroverted person. I like small intimate gatherings and I like spending a lot of time by myself or with my dogs in the middle of no where. But ask any of my friends and you'll find that most of them were people I felt a need to randomly strike up a conversation with. This is something that has happened very few times in the last 5 years. But over the last few months its happening more and more. And when I run into someone and start talking about things, I don't feel the urge to run away as soon as I can get the conversation stopped. I take the time to talk to them, to learn about them, to connect to people. Over the last few months I have met some amazing people and made great connections that will help me, my family, my friends, and my business in the future. I've also embraced that some times it really is not what you know but WHO you know. And I'm getting to know people. Stopping for a smile and a short chat. Brightening their day and in turn they are brightening mine. I'm once again learning to trust my intuition, my inner voice.

I challenge you to take a few minutes, just 10 or 15, and think about the positive things and changes that you've made in your life. Nothing is to small. It's so easy for us to focus on the bad but it takes effort to focus on the good. So put a little effort into thinking about the good things in life. You'll appreciate it in the short and long run.

Day 4 -Confidence where did you come from?

Its a beautiful day in Juneau. I made a crock pot stew for the first time in my life, spent hours listening to the IIN March Conference live on my lap top, and got great information. I even took Freya for a walk on the beach. The tide was up high, there were dogs everywhere and it was freezing cold and bright and sunny out.

Life seems so much different these days. Cooking food, learning new things, getting clients for my business, exploring new places and people with a dog at my side. These are the kinds of things I haven't done much of in years. They used to be an every day part of my life. Zeus and I would explore everywhere and introduce ourselves to random strangers who would later become my best friends. (Here's a shout out to Lydia, my best friend and soul sister who was met when I used to be confident and go out of my way to introduce myself to perfect strangers. Who knows what she was thinking when I introduced myself to her). But that was years ago and over the last 6 years I've lost confidence in myself, gained a lot of weight and discovered that staying home and reading my books was better then being outside. Which is such total nonsense I LOVE being outside and I love reading books. One of those shouldn't have come to dominate the other. But I lost my confidence in myself and everything I do and I allowed life events to lower my self esteem dramatically.

Things are changing, for the better. Today I walked Freya on the beach. No thought to it, just grabbed the dog, ran my eron (how the heck to you spell that?) and hit the freezing cold beach before heading home to school work and prepping for client meetings this week. No worries, no fears, no negative self talk. Just enjoying the moment, enjoying life. It was beautiful. While I mentally feel like I should go walk/run/job 10 miles like I used to with Zeus, I physically can only do a lot less then that. And that's ok. That's a huge step for me today. Realizing that its ok to do what I can do. One day I'll be there again. Walking my dogs, hiking my dogs, running my dogs, up and over mountains, all times of the day and night, by myself and with friends. But right now, I can't do that and that's ok. That's perfectly fine. What I can do is wonderful and I'm going to enjoy every moment of it and before I know it, I'll be able to do what I used to do, and I'll enjoy every moment of that to :)

Freya enjoying sunshine and watching the scary little dogs run on the beach.

Day 3 - oh crap

Today is the first day of a conference for IIN, and of course they're on Eastern standard time. So when they start at 10am its 6am in Alaska. I got up right at 6 this morning and hobbled half awake to boot up my laptop and join the conference from afar. Heartburn was bugging me so I suffered through some tums as I blinked wearily at my screen and logged on.  Taking a moment to be paranoid and put a cover on my webcam, I grabbed my water bottle and rinsed my mouth of the horrible after taste of tums. I don't know what was wrong with me as a kid that I thought those things tasted great. As I connected to the conference and slowly woke up it hit me. Yay I can take my pill and poof like magic I'll feel better and then in an hour I could eat breakfast and man today is just going to be a great freaking day. Oh crap. I took tums already. Did you know that you have to wait at least 4 hours after taking the thyroid meds in order to take an antacid? Double crap, I bet that means I have to wait 4 hours now before I can take my thyroid meds and I have to take them on an empty stomach. So a minimum of 2 hours after I eat and I can't eat for at least an hour after taking my meds. What the heck do I do now....great start to the day. :( bummer I don't want to eat until I take my pill but I just took tums...yep, i hate tums. Stupid heartburn

Day 2 on Thyroid Meds

Bummer, not feeling as awesome as yesterday but hey that's soo my fault. I was feeling so great yesterday I decided to eat some candy hearts full of chemicals, because I felt good and they tasted good. Not thinking about the fact that all the food dyes in them give me food allergy migraines.  Despite the pain in my head, I still feel better then normal. I just don't feel like doing anything. However I discovered that once I killed the light in my office and closed the blinds and stopped trying to move around much, I was able to function pretty normally the rest of the day! Which never happens with my food allergy migraines. Those things lay me up, barily able to do ANYTHING for 3 days. I mean no sound, no light and good god stay away from me, I spend as much time as I can laying in bed feeling truly miserable.

Yesterday I posted on facebook about how great I was feeling and got a lot of "I'm jealous" responses. I was shocked that so many of my friends had been experiencing thyroid issues and I never knew. In the process a friend told me about how all her thyroid tests had come back normal so she is only trying a thyroid supplement and it only lets her feel a little better. All of my tests for YEARS have come back in the normal range, but I have symptoms of hypothyroidism. I even have a huge goiter that causes me all sorts of problems. I've had ultra sounds done and seen a specialist. I hated that specialist. He sat for an hour at his computer and typed away and finally responded with telling me that when my thyroid got so large it was having serious issues functioning, then he would have it taken out and put me on medicine for the rest of my life. That's it. That's what came out of the hour session with a specialist. That and a bill for over $500. Wow, so freaking ridiculous.  Oh and he told me because my metabolism was so slow if I wanted to lose weight I would have to starve myself and exercise a lot.  I ignored my thyroid stuff for a while after that.

In the last year I've ran into 2 strangers who started talking to me about thyroid issues. Why, because my goiter is so large that a blind person could see it in the dark. Ignorant people could see that my enlarged neck had nothing to do with me being so over weight. These people had had thyroid issues of their own and they both urged me to not give up. To keep looking for answers and trying things. One lady was so passionate about it because of her own negative experiences and it taking years for her to come up with answers and by then she had to get surgery and get hers removed and now shes stuck on meds for the rest of her life. In the past 3 months 2 of my co-workers have ended up having thyroid issues. One had thyroid cancer and had it removed and the other had to have a nodule removed as well. These things have started to scare me and made me really want to learn more about my thyroid issues before they got worse.

Through my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition I've been learning that there are natural ways to heal your thyroid through things like nutrition, food, vitamin supplements. But it takes years and I was getting scared. I'll explain another time why it takes time. But for now, think on this, if took years for your body to be damaged so why wouldn't it take years for it to heal?!? So tests, more tests but this time through an integrative wellness nurse. Who looks at things from all different angles and not just what the tests show. We did more blood work and will be doing another ultra sound and a symptom write up and iodine tests. After much research, testing and talking we decided to put me on a low dose of a hypothyroid medicine and see how I respond. This is a TEMPORARY  thing. I will not be on meds for the rest of my life. But if the response is good then it helps me get my life back on track and then I will be able to start naturally healing myself. Some of you have no idea how hard it is to function in this state. So my immediate response has been good. We'll see what my blood work says in a couple weeks after being on the meds. And the results of the updated ultra sound.

So my advice to you. Don't give up. Keep learning and researching and pushing to find answers. We only live once and its worth it to have the best life we can.

Thyroid Meds Day 1

I'm on top of the world!
That is how I've felt all day. I can't remember feeling so well. I have more energy that I can imagine but its not "too" much you know. I feel like I can do anything I want to do. I'm more focused, not so foggy and slow. Normally I crash after every meal and right after work. Naps are my best friend but sometimes they just don't revive me enough to function like a human being. I've put off medication for years. I don't want medication. I hate being on pills and I'm not good about remembering to take them. I've been told that once your thyroid is messed up, it's messed up for life. But I'm learning that isn't true. Don't always believe what one health professional tells you. Do some research of your own and become well educated. New information is always coming out and the person you're seeing might not know. But they also might know things you wont find easy so make sure to talk to them about what you're reading and learning.

Back in black...or maybe pink

I was going to Yoga class. Finally! I've only said I would make it to class and not made it for over a year now. I have the gym membership and the couple times I've been to the class I've enjoyed it. But it's been over a year and I'm in worse shape then I was last time. But this time I wasn't going to let anything stop me. The clothes were clean and I finally had a working vehicle so I wasn't limited to the bus schedule or someone else's schedule. I was feeling good. My hair was in a pony tail, I had my yoga pants on and a comfortable tank top that went down over my hips so it wouldn't be showing off my fat to anyone else in class. I took a moment to check myself in the mirror. CRINGE Oh my god I was wearing a lot of black! Black yoga pants and the black tank top. The only saving grace was that my black sports bras are too tight now so I'd gone with a teal one. Which matched the teal on my black and teal tennis shoes.

I found myself frowning at the mirror. I understand wearing black when you're hugly overweight like I am. Black is slimming right?!? Bah hummbug this black was not making me look slimming. In fact if was feeling rather depressing. I'd thought that I've been doing better moving away from the all black thing I did in high school. I had started to add some white and moved on to blue while I was in high school. Over the last 10 years I've slowly added other colors into the mix. It was rather shocking to see myself in all black again. But I wasn't in all black. Not really. I had the teal bra poking out and the teal on my shoes that would be kicked off at the door. But my black yoga pants also had a pink stripe at the waist. Ah ha! I have colors on! With that smile of satisfaction the bounce came back into my step as I headed off to Yoga class.

But on my way to class I started to laugh. How could I have possibly thought I had to much black on. Look around me. I have my pink bag, with my pink water bottle and my pink yoga mat. I also was wearing a pink jacket. Oh my god when did I change from all black to all pink! PINK! of all colors. Once again the only saving grace was that teal sports bra peeking out. After all, I had chosen the teal one over the pink one because it was closer and I needed to get out the door without any more excuses. Because by golly I was going to make it to that damned Yoga class if it killed me. But now, I did it in pink. Oh if my friends from high school could see me now...

Health Forum Day

It's Saturday October 19th and you know what that means. Health Forum Day! I love this day. I look forward to it every year. I change my work schedule for it. I plan for it a year in advance. The Cancer Connection of Juneau has put on two health forums a year for as long as I've known about it (5 years and I don't know how long they've actually done it) In April they do a Men's Health Forum that I've been trying to convince my husband to go to for years. In October they do a Women's Health Forum that I've attended a few times.

I love love LOVE the women's health forum. Even if the topic isn't something you originally think will interest you, you always walk away with great things and vast amounts of awesome relevant information that you use over the next year to improve your health and those of others. Even if the topic isn't something you want, you go for the booths. Over a dozen booths are set up by different companies around Juneau from fitness places, to wellness places. Chiropractors, Public Health, Yoga Studios, Massage Offices, Community Health Groups. There is something for everyone. I love the booths. I always leave with a bag full of goodies and a pile of information that I spend the next year and years after, sharing with my friends and family and well basically anyone who'll listen to me. I always learn valuable things at those booths. Things that I take when me and retain for years. Like adding different vitamins into my diet and why. I make contacts that I keep for years at those booths and I find out about great community resources.

Last fall my husband decided that he would be interested in attending the Men's Health Forum this year and I looked about for information on the date and topic up the forum. No matter where I looked, I couldn't find any information. I finally talked to someone from cancer connection who told me they were combining the two forums into one community health forum this year in hopes of getting a better attendance. I was surprised by this news. The women's health forum was always backed with every chair full and every meal taken (they always provide a free healthy lunch). The hallways and entrance way was always packed and you usually had to stand in line for some of the better booths. Like the one last year that did a complete body assessment for free. They even gave you a print out that told you about your body fat percentage and your hydration level. It was awesome. But I had heard before that the men's health forum just doesn't get as good attendance so on one level I could understand why they would combine them. So, no problem, my husband was perfectly happy at the thought of joining me for the health forum come October.

We put the date in both our schedules and went about recruiting friends to join us. I was so excited. I would be going with a group of like minded people who wanted to learn more about health. We changed work schedules around and worked family events around the upcoming health forum. We even got a couple family members excited to join us. I talked about my plans to have a booth at the one in 2014 representing my health coaching business that I'll have by then. I added it to my goals and started putting together a support group who would assist me with it in 2014.

As the date got nearer I started really looking for information. What was this year's topic? Were their going to be new booths this year and by who. Who was the speaker this year? Every year they bring up someone from down south and you can google them and find out more about them, their knowledge and their history. I was finally able to track down the topic. "The Importance of Cancer Screening: Why you should get tested and when" Ooook. Well that wasn't something I was interested in. I'm 30. But hey they always have good information you take away and maybe a future client could use something I'll learn there. So the health forum was still on.

Knowing how I felt about the topic I figured other people my age will feel the same way. So as I spread the message about the upcoming event I made sure to remind people to go anyways. They would get something helpful in the lecture but they should really go for the booths. They would get a lot of great information from the booths and then stay for the lecture and get a free healthy lunch. That is what really got the guys. They would sit with the other guys and get a free meal and maybe pick up some good information along the way.

This year I gave up my dream of going to the Alaska Day Festival in Sitka with my drumming group. My husband also almost gave up an opportunity to drive a really cool vehicle he got special training for from the military in the Alaska Day Parade. It was a big deal for him to give up going to the health forum to volunteer to do that with the National Guard. But we decided it would be better for him to do that and come to the health forum with my next year. I would take a ton of notes and share it with him when he got back. Then the government shutdown happened and they cancelled the Sitka trip. He was once again excited to be joining me at the health forum. This was a pretty big deal. My husband never wants to join me in my pursuit of health knowledge, he supports it but he doesn't want to sit on his butt during a lecture that will probably bore him.

Today dawned dark and dreary. We heard the rain pouring down before we even got out of bed. One person cancelled joining us. But that wouldn't stop our joy. We got up and got dressed. Eating a light breakfast. We packed our water bottles and I reorganized my purse to make sure I would have pens and a notebook to take the tons of notes I was sure I would be taking. A couple plans changed and we picked up my younger brother on the drive downtown. There was excitement on the car ride and not just for the game the guys were talking about during the drive.

We pulled up at Centennial Hall and looked around confused. There weren't many cars there. They had changed the time of the forum this year. Instead of 10-3 it was 11:30-2. I thought that was really odd. In the past I would get there at 10 and still barely have time to get through all the booths I wanted to and get a set before the lecture started. I always end up sitting in the back. It's not like I ask a lot of questions or talk to them a lot. I just like to see all the information that is presented. So I was worried about only getting to check out a few booths this year before the lecture. I was also curious why there were two key note speakers instead of one and both of them were local doctors not some specialist from down south.

We crawled out of the car and headed into the building. We opened the doors and I stopped to look around. Usually you can hear the roar of the crowd before you open the doors but there was a mere quiet murmuring coming from the distance. The entrance way was empty of booths. OK. Maybe they had less booths this year because the topic would have a smaller turn out AND they didn't have as much time. We wondered on, my notebook clutched to my chest, my cheeks pink with excitement. I couldn't wait to greet old friends and make new friends and see what this year's venue was.

We walked into the main entrance room and looked around puzzled. I understood why the  majority of the crowd was of an older generation. The topic would appeal to them and a number of them were into health and nutrition. What I didn't understand was why there were so few people and why there was only the one table by the doors to the lecture hall. The table belonged to cancer connection and they just had a few things on it. A donation box, a couple brochures and the pamphlet that said what was being served for lunch.

We strolled to a corner of the room and looked around disappointed. They guys immediately told me they were ready to go. They had mostly come for the booths and the free lunch and without the booths, the lunch just wasn't much of a draw since the topic wasn't one that interested us much.  Part of me wanted to stay. Surely there would be something good to know from the lectures. But most of me was confused where were all the booths? Where was everyone? I waited for a break in the almost non existent crowd and went over to the table to ask the people manning it about things.

They polity informed me that since a lot of those booths were represented at the city health thing that goes on (what city health thing?) and a lot of the same people attend that and get free health screenings (free health screenings? thats the thing that is mostly put on by the hospital. I went to it once, there was no free health screenings. Every itty bitty thing costs money. Anywhere from $10 to $170. I didn't get anything valuable out of that thing and I've never gone back. I've also never heard anything positive from anyone about the event) Also the space they use for the events costs money and since they're depended on things like donations they want to spend that money on other things like the apartment. This last bit about the apartment was rather pointedly and defensively said to me.

Now I understand that they're a not for profit and that funds are small because of the recession and all. And Cancer Connection does a lot of other good things. The apartment thing mentioned is this apartment they rent in Seattle for people and their families when they're going through Cancer treatment. It costs so much money to fly people out of Juneau down to Seattle and make them stay there for so long to get treatment. It's great that Cancer Connection has that apartment there for them that helps lesson the cost and stress of the families going through that horrible thing. That is a great great thing that they do. But no men's health forum, no booths full of information, no out of town great speaker and not even a topic that is going to appeal to a lot of people. Oh and no mention anywhere that for format was going to be different then how they've done it in the past. I was, am still so increadibly dissapointed.

I feel like I wasted my time and the time of others. I also feel like a fraud. I told people to go to the event even though they might not be interested in the topic. Go, I said, Go and meet the people at the booths and listen to the lecture. You'll get something good out of it, I promise. That's right, I promised people. I don't make promises unless I keep them. I believe that promises should only be made if you will keep them no matter what. Except if you die.

So I'm terribly disappointed and I'm not ashamed to say that I left. Why would I stay? Because I might, just might get some kind of information that I'll appreciate in the future, or that someone else will. Well blah. I'm going home, I'm venting online and I'm taking this thing out of next year's schedule. If the topic looks good, I'll go. I might even suffer through the stupid non-city city health thingy. Maybe.

Dietbet

I've never done a diet bet before. I only recently heard about them from one of the people I follow on facebook who've lost a lot of weight. Now another person I follow on facebook who's lost over 200 pounds is starting a diet bet. So I joined. Me and my impulses. Well maybe it'll help motivate me to do it. Anyone feel like joining me? Heres the link to the facebook of the person who set it up. It's open to anyone to sign up.

Countdown to Skinny Jeans

So Sparkpeople.com is doing this 30 days to skinny jeans challenge thing. So far its kind of cool but Oh-My-God it isn't exactly easy. Not for me anyways. I know after a month of doing these daily tasks I'm not going to be able to fit into my "skinny jeans" but then, my skinny jeans are from being 90 pounds less then I am right now. But maybe I'll have actually committed to something for a while week and I'll be able to fill good about that. As well as having tried some new exercises and I'll have lost some weight or started using muscles I didn't know I had.

Take today for instance. So every hour I try to get my butt up out of my chair for at least a minute. I walk down the hall, walk around my office or go down and back up a flight of stairs. So today since day one of the challenge is these four exercises you do for a minute each. I added one exercise to each stair set. So at 9am I walked down the stairs and back up and then did the exercise. OK that wasn't easy but it wasn't so hard. Then at 11a I did my stairs again (now my body is starting to whisper at me about how lazy I've been and how out of shape I am) and then went to do the second exercise. Ow. My inability to do the exercise was laughable. But I still tried and I did it to the best of my ability. I want to be able to keep this up.

I have huge dreams. But this month I'm just taking it one nice comfortable step at a time.

Come join me on the skinny jeans challenge on sparkpeople. Its bound to be fun.

http://www.sparkpeople.com/skinnyjeans

Today is Day 2 but I'm doing day 1's stuff as well as day 2 so I can catch up. Becides, I need the extra exercise. So yeah, here is the day one exercise and phoooy I could barely get my butt off the ground on the second exercise.

Exercise Junkie

I am an exercise junkie. I blame it on my mother. I recently found out that my mom exercised every single day she was pregnant with me. Every Single Day. I think that does something to a kid. Seriously, getting introduced to endorphins that early on. THAT is how you get kids addicted to the good kinds of drugs.

Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, she actually encouraged me to play outside and use my imagination when I was a child! ~gasp~ Outside?!? Playing in the sun, rain and snow. Burning energy and increasing my mental capacities all at the same time. Why, oh why would someone want to encourage me to exercise and make friends? To breath fresh air and observe the wonderment that is the natural world around us? Mom, what were you  thinking? How dare you encourage and teach me to grow up strong and healthy. Oh horror.

On a side note: What if more parents these days encouraged that? Would we be in this obesity epidemic? I know there are a lot of things that factor into where we are as a nation these days, but I strongly believe that healthy habits (like exercise) creates healthier brains which of course helps us make better decisions. So if we could make better choices and teach our young to make better choices, then perhaps we as a society would make better choices?

I am happiest when I'm out in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by nature and my dogs. Endorphins cruising through my body and giving me a high you can't get anywhere else. Where is your happiest place on earth?

Incredible me

Today is the first day of my classes through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. As I was reading through my materials, watching videos and listening to lectures I found myself overwhelmed with excitement for this upcoming year and the possibilities this training opens up for me. I quickly opened another tab and posted on Facebook about what I was doing. After I pressed "post" I had a sudden sense of dread. A worry about what other people will think when they read my post.

I've always been a very active person. Yoga, bellydancing, horseback riding, hiking, mixed martial arts, karate, modern dance, drama, running, cross country, soccer, basketball, volleyball, backpacking. I love being outside and active. But I've also always loved food and I'm an emotional eater. So despite my high level of activity I've always been heavy. None of that compares to the weight I gained a couple years back and have horribly maintained. With the added weight came a extreme lowering of self confidence. So despite my passion for exercise, health and nutrition. I always feel like such a fraud talking to people about it. I mean surly they're listening to me and then looking at me and thinking "yeah right, like you know anything. If you know so much how come you're such a fat ugly cow?"

So that is what popped into my head the second I posted my plans to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach and better my own health and those of the people around me. "Oh dear God what have I done?!?" The panic set in. So I got up and walked away from the computer. I've been listening to these pre-classes for school and I was choosing to ignore that negative voice that says I can't do something. Haven't people since I was a child told me how stubborn I used to be? How I refused to accept limitations and therefore blew threw the pre conceived limits proving that nothing is impossible. That's right! Just because I look one way on the out side right now doesn't mean that is how I am inside!

That burst of self-confidence didn't last very long. I found myself back at the computer ready to delete my post. But in that little time things had changed. Already numerous friends had liked the post and many people had posted positive uplifting comments. Holy crap! Dose that mean people don't look at me and think all the negative things I always assume they think about me? Mind blowing!

So my thought for the moment. Don't always assume the worse. All you do is convince yourself of limitations that don't really exist. Whats the worse thing that could happen? Can you accept that? Is it something you can live with? Whats the best thing that could happen? How does that make you feel? Then freaking go for it!

Yeah, that's right. I'm going for it. I refuse to accept no for an answer. This is my life and I'm tried of living it a certain way out of fear for what others think. From the sticker on my lap top from college: Those who are different, change the world. Those who are the same, keep it that way.

Be different. Change the world. One person at a time and watch the world ripple.

Being positive

Was it the12 hours of sleep I got? Maybe the days of sunlight that we've had lately. Or possibly the exercise I got yesterday? Maybe the fact that I stayed within my calorie limit yesterday and didn't feel hungry or starved or even had to try hard to do so. Honestly, I don't really know why I feel like this but I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. I feel awesome! Great! Fantastic! Amazing, positive, enthusiastic and just plan good. I feel wonderful today. I don't have that over the top feeling of fantasticness, like nothing can go wrong. I just feel really good. I know things aren't perfect, but that's ok. I'm about to take my break and go walk the track at work for 15 minutes. Which is known to be painful for me. But within 15-30 minutes afterwards, I feel fine, good, great. And one day, one day I won't even be in pain or tired after a 15 minute walk. One day it'll be like nothing. It'll be the short walk that it is and I'll be wishing I could do more.

I live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. But I'm not going to live here forever. I'm tired of taking it for granted. This summer, this next year. I'm going to start getting out there and enjoying what this place has to offer. I'm going to stop taking it for granted and ignoring it because I've seen it every day for the last 20 years. I'm going to go out and enjoy it, relish in it. I'm going to really take a look at the beauty of the world around me.

Stupid Stairs

I've been having a good morning. Despite my youngest becoming rather stuck to my side since my husband boarded the plane this morning for another week long drill. My youngest will be 2 in May. Hes the cutest little fuzz ball that you've ever seen. He's a dog by the way. He was being so spastic and needy this morning I decided to take him to work with my when I finally headed out the door at noon. The weather has been rather erratic lately but I figured with his thick almost husky coat, he should be fine. Plus this way he gets a short walk during the middle of the day!

So I'm feeling pretty good. I took my husband to the airport early this morning. Came home and re-familiarized myself with where the swords and guns are in the house, you know, safety first :) Got dressed, made the good chai tea with lots of sugar, extra strong and some french vanilla creamer. It's awesome. I got to talk to my husband on the drive to work. I found out that my nature's box that I paid for on the 1st and they finally shipped on the 8th is FINALLY in town. So it should be dropped off either today or tomorrow. It sucks that it takes almost a month after ordering to get to Juneau. Every time so far it gets as far as Federal Way Washington and then sits there for a week or two before it leaves for Alaska. Stupid USPS.

So I park all the way across the parking lot. Not that its a very big parking lot and not just because little Ares will guard my car against anyone who gets near it but also for the little bit of extra walk that I could get in. I'm feeling on a health kick today. I'm going to get exercise and feel good about it. I'm getting rid of this extra weight! So in the spirited frame of mind I'm in I decided to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Its not like it's a lot of extra work but I'm not carrying my lap top and all that extra weight in my bag today and I was feeling spunky so up the 3 flights of stairs I went.

It's been a half hour and I'm only now feeling like I can settle down and really get back to work. I always get a little winded going up the stairs. My legs ache and I feel out of breath but today with my heart pounding and I felt to hot and a little sweaty after I sat down at my desk. Lame, super lame. Now, no matter how I feel that day I'm going to walk up those stupid stairs. Everywhere I go, I'm taking the stupid stairs. Until I nolonger feel winded just from walking up the stupid stairs. Stupid stairs.

Self Magazine Review

I love Sparkpeople.com. I can't not love it. Although I know people can find it overwhelming and confusing when first joining it. The site is absolutely amazing. Giving you resources and support on your health journey. It's not like any other free wight loss website out there. I know, I've joined dozens of them. But sparkpeople isn't just about weight loss. It's about getting healthy. They have a lot of resources from support groups to an online health coach. They even have stuff about getting financially healthy as well. This site is great for everyone. Lose weight, gain bulk, tone up, healthier eating, vegan diets, all sorts of stuff. The first year I got on them I didn't really use it because of a lot of reasons. Partly I couldn't figure out how to use it and partly because my life went to hell in a hand basket 2 months later. But I'm not really here to talk so much about sparkpeople as something else.

Sparkpeople has this great person on their staff who goes by "Coach Nicole" shes inspirational and amazing. She talks about finding your healthy weight and not trying to force yourself down to unhealthy images we see on tv and in magazines. This summer she got the opportunity to work with SELF magazine. It was great. She wrote about the experience and the cloths and the people she worked with. But as she was talking about it, there was things posted on sparkpeople about how she was going to be in the September Issue. It was July and she was so excited and positive about things and I was in such need for some extra boosts of positivity and health that I decided to sign up for the Magazine. It was like $12 for a year! So in July I signed up for it. And Paid for a full year subscription by internet. Of course they always say expect 6-8 weeks for the first edition to reach you. In August I decided to subscribe to Yoga Journal and Vegetarian Times. All in my pursuit for a happier, healthier, better future.

The first week in September I got both Yoga Journal and Vegetarian Times in the mail. I decided to paitently wait for my SELF magazine while I poored through those other two and started incorporating things into my life. By the end of the first week in October I still hadn't recieved an issue of SELF. I had even ran around town looking for a September issue in September because I didn't want to miss out on the one with Coach Nicole in it. I couldn't find a single place that had any copies. That was in September. I figured that when I finally got my copy in the mail I could give the extra copy away to someone else who might be interested.

Stores are supposed to switch over to the next issues of magazines the last week of the month before. So October issues went out between the 20th and 25th of September. Not that I could find any of those ones in town. The whole point of signing up was to get September's issue with Coach Nicole. By the end of the first week in October I had yet to recieve a single issue of SELF magazine. I got online and checked my account. They weren't going to send me a September issue. They were starting my subscription in October. Even though I had signed up and paid in July. Ok whatever, I figured I would see what they were like anyways. But I had already begun to recieve weekly requests to renew my subscription in my email and my mailbox. I hadn't even gotten and SINGLE issue yet and they were bugging me to renew already! I sent an email to their customer service explaining that I had yet to recieve a single issue and the first week of October was almost over. I of course got the email saying they recieved my email and a customer service person would be contacting me shortly. A WEEK later they emailed me and all the person said was that at the time of my email the magazine wasn't considered late yet. That was it. How lame is that?

So I waited and by the last week of October I had STILL not received October's issue. I sent another email explaining that. All I got in responce was the automated email saying someone would be in touch with me shortly. It's December 19th. No one EVER got in touch with me. No email, no phone call. I finally recieved my October issue on the last saturday of the month. Over a week since the stores would have pulled the October issue off the shelves. November...same thing happened. got my November issue the last weekend of the month. Ever other magazine subcription I've gotten in my life have all come within the flast week of the month prior or the first few days of that month. I have had a LOT of magazine subscriptions over the years. Until recently I regularly subscribed to a large number of horse magazines. I used to subscribe to a number of fitness and health magazines as well. I have never had such poor service.

I will not be renewing my subscription to them. Their service sucks and their magazine is over 75% advertisements. Whats really sad is that this put a damper on my enthusiasm about sparkpeople and coach nicole. But it wasn't only a small damper. No one is perfect. And for every person that complains theres like 10 people who love it. But I wont have anything to do with them ever again. It was only a $12 mistake, but it's still a total bummer.

I continue to receive weekly emails and letters urging me to renew and sign up a friend. I don't think there is anyone I dislike enough to sign them up free or for a small price.
